EEOC to collect pay data in effort to address inequity
Mark Payne is quoted in a Daily Journal article, “ EEOC to collect pay data in effort to address inequity.” By September 30, the EEOC requires employers with 100 or more employees to submit pay data based on gender, race and national origin. In the article, Payne explains, “The stated purpose for collecting it is to enforce the anti-discrimination laws.” He also notes, however, that the requested data is rudimentary and does not include any data about the reasons for the reported pay information, saying: “Is it their job performance? Their work experience? Their background or productivity? These are obviously important explanations or reasons for differences in pay, and none of that’s being collected here.” He agreed with others that “employers should be proactive and start auditing their own practices before the commission starts ‘crunching’ that data.”
