Hispanic Heritage Month 2020 Attorney Spotlight - Edgar Vargas
Editor’s Note: Hispanic Heritage Month, September 15 through October 15, recognizes the contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans. September 15 is significant because it is the anniversary of independence for several Latin American countries. Throughout the month, we will be speaking with a few of our Hispanic attorneys and sharing their stories.
Here, Edgar Vargas, an attorney in our Orange County, California office, discusses his Mexican American roots and associated challenges when he was growing up. If you’re in San Francisco or Southern California, he shares some great restaurant tips, too.
What would you like to tell us about your Hispanic/Latino heritage?
While I was born in California, both of my parents are migrants from Mexico. My mother is from Mazatlán, Sinaloa, and my father is from a small town in Guanajuato. I identify as Mexican American. I first learned to speak Spanish at home with my family.
What challenges did you face growing up as a Latino?
My parents depended on my sister and me for translation. Before developing my translation skills, my parents could not meet with my teachers without someone translating for them. At the time, this didn't feel like a challenge; to the contrary, it felt like a blessing. My teachers were unable to communicate with my parents about all the times I was getting in trouble in school, I thought! In retrospect, the experience hindered my teacher's ability to communicate with my parents on where I needed additional attention in my studies. This challenge, while not unique to Latinos, is prevalent to many of us across the nation.
Who do you look up to in the Hispanic/Latino community?
I look up to both of my parents. They are resilient, thoughtful, and amazing human beings. Despite the numerous challenges they faced growing up, they persevered.
Is there a good Latino restaurant or business you recommend?
There are a couple that I like. If you're in San Francisco, check out La Taqueria. The burritos there are so good! Make sure you order your tacos or burritos "dorado" for that extra crunch.
If you're in Southern California, check out Las Cuatro Milpas in San Diego. The food is delicious! Try their tamales; you will not regret it. Make sure to check their hours, though. They're only open during the day.
