Legal Aid to Expand its Law Hotline Using Retiree Volunteers
Troutman Sanders pro pono efforts were mentioned in a September 23 Daily Report article about the Atlanta Legal Aid Society – thanks to a $213k grant from Legal Services Corporation – stepping up its efforts to recruit lawyers as volunteers to help clients over the phone. These lawyers will advise seniors “ … with writing wills and advanced directives for end-of life medical treatment, fending off debt collectors and securing government benefits for medical care, housing, unemployment and food stamps.” Specifically, Troutman Sanders lawyers draft Qualified Income Trusts (more than 500 over the years) so that seniors qualify for Medicaid benefits for nursing homes.
Recent firm volunteers have included Atlanta of counsel Judith Fuller, associate Allison Will, staff attorney Mark Windham, paralegal Susan Pendergrass and secretary Naomi Biles.
