Troutman Sanders Client Subject of Academy Award Winning Documentary Film
New York - Troutman Sanders LLP congratulates firm client Darlene Love on Sunday night’s Oscar Award for Best Documentary, “ 20 Feet From Stardom,” a film that documented the lives of Love and several other incredibly talented women in their previously unheralded roles as back-up singers for some of the most influential voices in American music history, including: Sam Cooke, Dionne Warwick, The Beach Boys, Bruce Springsteen, Elvis Presley, Tom Jones and Sonny and Cher. The documentary has received wide-spread praise, already earning the 2014 Critics' Choice Award for Best Documentary Feature and a place on the National Board of Review's list of Top Five Documentaries.
Love’s acceptance speech at the Academy Awards event in Los Angeles was described by Entertainment Weekly as the “transcendent moment of joy” of the entire broadcast. Love is represented by Michael Friedman, a partner in the firm’s New York office. Friedman routinely represents artists, financiers, investors, production companies, managers, talent agencies and internet companies in all aspects of entertainment law.
“It was so exciting to see this film, which so richly documented the storied careers of Darlene and her fellow backup singers for their role in the music industry, take home such a well-deserved honor,” said Friedman. “Their stories were not always glamorous, but they are important and deserve to be told. Their names may not all be famous, but their voices are familiar to all of us who cherish the music that we all enjoy every day.”
Love’s story is also the subject of a motion picture currently in development titled “My Name is Love,” the first movie ever produced by Oprah Winfrey’s OWN network. The movie will tell the dramatic story of Love’s early career as a back-up singer, her many personal struggles and the amazing resurgence of her career as evidenced by her induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2011 and the recognition bestowed upon her in the Academy Award winning documentary. Friedman and Troutman Sanders are representing Love in connection with the upcoming film on OWN Network.
