Troutman Sanders Receives ABA's National Public Service Award
ATLANTA – March 18, 2013 – Troutman Sanders LLP has been honored by the American Bar Association’s Business Law Section with a 2013 National Public Service Award in recognition of the firm’s ongoing contribution to providing pro bono business legal services to low-income individuals and nonprofit organizations.
The award, which began in 1994, recognizes law firms, corporate law departments and business law individuals that demonstrate a significant commitment to providing pro bono legal services. Honorees are selected based upon their overall pro bono legal efforts, as well as the development of innovative approaches to providing free business legal services, and the delivery of sustained volunteer business counsel to nonprofit organizations or to microbusinesses in aid of community development.
Other recipients of the 2013 award are Verizon Communications and James H. Patterson of Patterson Thuente Christensen Pedersen P.A. in Minneapolis.
“Troutman Sanders exemplifies the characteristics the ABA Business Law Section seeks to recognize in awarding its National Public Service Award,” said Peter Carson, chair of the National Public Service Award selection committee for the ABA. “These characteristics include a deep and sustained commitment to business law pro bono across the law firm, highlighted by singular achievements; enduring client relationships; collaborative partnerships; and innovative, needle moving signature projects.”
Troutman Sanders was nominated for the award based on the firm’s extensive, ongoing work with numerous pro bono clients including Kids In Need of Defense (KIND), the Women’s Economic Development Agency, Goodwill Industries of Central Virginia, and the Pro Bono Partnership of Atlanta. The firm also has partnered with in-house legal departments at Turner Broadcasting System, Inc. and Southern Company.
One of the firm’s most recent pro bono successes came in December 2012 when Troutman Sanders attorneys participated with NBC Universal lawyers to provide 23 seniors at a Los Angeles community center with advanced health care directives and financial powers of attorney. The initiative was so successful that a second program is planned for later this year.
“I am delighted and honored that Troutman Sanders has been selected by the Business Law Section for this prestigious award,” said Mark VanderBroek, a Troutman Sanders partner and chair of the firm’s Pro Bono Committee. “We don’t do the things we do in the pro bono area for recognition, but this award is flattering and a testament to the efforts of a lot of lawyers and staff at our firm.”
The award will be presented April 5 at the ABA Business Law Section’s spring meeting in Washington, D.C. VanderBroek, as well as Managing Partner Stephen E. Lewis, will attend the event on behalf of Troutman Sanders.
