State attorneys general (AGs) are unique among government regulatory and enforcement agencies, combining political power and broad legal authority to take action to protect what they perceive as the public interest.
Increasingly, state AGs are having an outsized impact nationally by launching investigations and enforcement actions, singly and in multistate groups, targeting various industries and business practices. Businesses that operate in areas where the law and regulations are still developing, as well as those that regularly interact with consumers, are of particular interest to state AGs. In this environment, businesses need skilled and experienced legal counsel who know how to resolve the legal challenges presented by state AGs, as well as advise on the regulatory and compliance issues that can help deter or mitigate enforcement actions and litigation.
Our State AG Team has handled AG investigations involving all 50 states. We combine strong legal skills with firsthand experience developed from resolving hundreds of matters with AGs across the U.S. to bring order to the chaos. Our State AG Team is made up of more than 35 attorneys, including a former attorney general, two former state solicitors general, three former deputy attorneys general, a former deputy solicitor general, a former assistant deputy attorney general and six former assistant attorneys general, as well as attorneys with a variety of other governmental backgrounds and decades of experience representing clients in multiple industry sectors in state AG enforcement actions and litigation.
We maintain strong professional relationships with numerous state AGs, both Democratic and Republican, as well as AG organizations such as the National Association of Attorneys General (NAAG), Attorney General Alliance (AGA), Republican Attorney General Association (RAGA), and Democratic Attorney General Association (DAGA). We also follow the evolving political landscape of state AGs nationally through our election tracker.
Our State AG Team is integrated with a broader regulatory practice, allowing the team to draw from an even deeper bench with experience with other regulators with whom state AGs often partner, including the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Health and Human Services (HHS), Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Department of Justice (DOJ), and non-governmental organizations like the Better Business Bureau (BBB).
We closely track state AG activity nationwide, and frequently share our insights on state regulatory and enforcement issues through our Regulatory Oversight blog and podcast.
